We've been in Africa a week and one of the biggest lessons I've learned is skin color matters. Being white plays such a huge role, whether the Africans are enthralled by you, scared of you (children will literally cry), it even determines if people come to Jesus.
The village we're staying in is very secluded. There is no electricity, we have to walk to a different building to use the bathroom, the shower is in a seperate building (a shower consists of a bucket of water...) The people are beautiful though. Children come literally from every direction to see us. The speak very little English but find it very amusing when we talk. They are obsessed with cameras. If you want a picture of just one kid, you have to take one of 12. One of the downsides of all the kids is the only moment of alone time is inside in a very hot stuffy room. The moment you step outside children swarm you yelling "Hello" over and over.
As far as ministry goes, we were split up into 5 groups and went to 5 different churches in the surrounding areas (there's 12 churches all together). The church building s are very small, if there's even a building at all, and they are packed full of people! I was partnered with Megan Johnson, who I love dearly and we went to the Delieverance Church in Bunyinza with Pastor Daniel Oroni. We spent the afternoon speaking breifly about how excited we were to be there and thanking them for welcoming us, we taught the children at the church how to play "duck, duck, goose" wheich they absolutely loved and we finished by having dinner with the Pastor and his family. He explained how God gave their church a vision to start a school for the chilren in the area. They currently have 400 students enrolled with no building or anyway of accomodating them. The pastor had to take our a personal loan (one of which he can hardly afford) to put towards building the school. The chrch has full confidence the Lord will provide all they need, at the time they need it. How awesome!! Something I hope my church practices too, especially as we are going through the building process.
There's so much more I could write, but there is lack of time. It's been one week and I've already made it to the hospital...I'm okay, but we'll save that story for another time. Please keep praying for me and my team. God has great plans in store for us, but some of us (me) are experiencing a bit of a dry season. Thanks for all the support!
Sending my Love to all back home!!!
